Japan is perceived to be a “unique” country not only by the general public but also academics. Therefore, for long time idea that every aspect of Japanese history was unique setting it apart from its continental neighbors prevailed. History religion and intellectual currents in are no exception this point view. While Shinto considered native Japan, Buddhism, Confucianism other religious entered via Korea they influenced shinto as much Japan. In respect, while retains some characteristics just any has characteristics, closely linked intellectually religiously despite geographic isolation an island. regard, putting early medieval within geographically broader East Asian perspective connection with China essential better comprehend both similar developments vis-à-vis neighbors.
